Groundhog Day Community Celebration set for Feb. 1

The spirit of your favorite newspaper will come to life on Saturday, Feb. 1, as “The Groundhog” hosts its first Groundhog Day Community Celebration. The event is sponsored by the newspaper and its publisher, MERF.

A Day of Food and Family Fun

The event will be held at the gym on the historic Moon Lake School campus. The fun kicks off at 10 a.m. with a variety of activities for the kids. This includes games and art activities, along with a groundhog costume contest.

Calling all bakers to submit your favorite sweet creations for the Community Cake Walk. Lucky winners will go home with delicious cakes, pies, and cobblers.

Ribbons and bragging rights are at stake in the Crock-Pot Cookoff. There will be three divisions: chilis, soups, and stews. The entries will be available for purchase after judging.

The first half of the Groundhog Day Community Celebration will end with a discussion and workshop on community stories. This will include a talk by well-known storyteller Fred Hunter, who hosted “Absolutely Alabama” for 25 years and continues telling stories through his podcast and newsletter “Fred Hunter’s Alabama.”

Community “Generation Dance” and Contest

The day’s festivities will pick back up with the Groundhog Day Community Dance. From 5 to 9 p.m., the gym will come alive with music and an opportunity for people to shake a leg and cut a rug.

Part of the evening will be devoted to a “generation dance.” Focus will shift between different generations, beginning with the 1950s and extending through the modern era. The best dancers will be recognized for each generation. Prizes will also be awarded for best costumes from each era. The dance will be open to kids and adults alike.
