Going Nuts for Education

Each spring, two Valley Head High School seniors receive 0 scholarships from the Valley Head Area Women’s Club. Each fall, the women’s club raises funds for these scholarships through a bake sale and a pecan sale.
Thank you to everyone who made this year’s bake sale a success! It is held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. If you missed it this year, go ahead and mark your calendar to make your holiday baking a little easier.
The pecan sale starts as soon as the pecans are delivered in early November and continues until they are all sold. These are fresh-crop pecans packaged and shipped immediately to the club. You can choose between deliciously fresh pieces or mammoth halves. If you go nuts for education, contact me at the number below.
Now you may be asking, “What is the Valley Head Area Women’s Club?” The club began in 1930 with women from the local area (not just Valley Head). For decades, it was part of a larger women’s federation. However, for the past several decades, it has been an individual club to keep funds local. We meet once a month and have a program on a variety of local topics, including other local organizations, women’s health, and our local history.
In recent years, the women’s club fundraising has focused solely on scholarships for Valley Head School. Prior to that, funds were used for a variety of projects. Larger scholarship programs were supported. The Church Street and Council Tree signs were erected. Donations were made to the local school band and libraries, DeKalb Mental Health Association, and the Child Advocacy Center, to name a few.
In December, we gather for a joyous Christmas meal with all of our spouses. In spring, our programs will include talks from Valley Head Mayor Karen Vest, Landmarks of DeKalb, and a health presentation about osteoarthritis. Each meeting includes refreshments and is filled with chatter among friends. If you are interested in our club or want to purchase pecans, I would love to hear from you.
