August: Between Frenzy and Flow

The Walmart parking lot is always too crowded for me in August. Shopping carts overflow with new shoes, backpacks, pencils, and notebooks — all the pieces that make back-to-school season feel both exciting and overwhelming.

Parents feel it. A mix of relief and sadness wells up as kids head back to school. The quiet of a house once full of summer energy is shifting from play back to routine, from free time back to schedules.

But beneath all that busy-ness, August holds something deeper. It’s not just about getting through the supply lists or adjusting to the school drop-off line. It’s also about recognizing August as a kind of spiritual checkpoint.

August carries a very particular kind of energy. It’s a time of harvesting: not just fruits or vegetables, but also the results of whatever seeds I’ve planted earlier in the year. Projects I’ve started. Healing work I’ve been doing. Changes I’ve been sitting with, waiting to see what takes root.

For me, August is the in-between space: the ground is still warm, the sun still shines, but there’s a whisper of change in the air. It’s a month when I pause and ask myself, “what do I want to carry forward… and what do I want to let go of?”

There’s a deeper lesson in that for me. We often think growth only happens when things look bright and productive. But real growth, the kind that sticks with us, often happens in quieter times like August…when we anticipate fall’s cool breath just around the corner.

Parents might be standing in that Walmart aisle thinking only about backpacks and glue sticks, but life’s bigger lessons are swirling there, too. It’s about finding your footing as things shift. It’s about breathing through the frenzy and remembering balance and flow are possible, even necessary.

So if August feels like too much or not enough, both are true. It’s a time to walk more slowly. Notice more. Let both the light and shadow in. That’s where transformation lives.

You’ve got this.
