New Eatery, More Volunteer Firemen, and Council Election

August is upon us, and with that brings the summer heat, students heading back to the classrooms and, thank goodness, a shorter time before fall arrives.

We are so excited to see retail and dining options growing in our town. Work continues on the former Rib Shack building, and we are excited to see what new business will soon be opening in its current location. June Bug’s Children’s Consignment Shop is now open within Sweet Repeats, located at 71 Winston Street in beautiful downtown Valley Head. If you have young children, this sweet little shop is a must-see. Progress also continues on the new space at 157 Commerce Avenue, soon to be a Taqueria. We are so proud that Valley Head will have so many wonderful dining options.

Family Movie Night in June was a hit.

Our first Family Movie Night was held Saturday, June 7, on the field in front of Town Hall. The Disney classic “Moana 2” was a hit with young and old alike. We will schedule the next movie night sometime in early August. Let us know what film you would like to see!

The Valley Head Planning Commission recently met as our first step in updating our master plan and zoning map, which have not been updated in over 40 years. We will be working with the mapping department in DeKalb County as well as Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG) and our town attorney, Jay Skinner. We hope to clarify several pressing zoning issues we are currently facing, as well as plan for future growth.

The Valley Head Volunteer Fire Department recently added several members to its roster. We are so pleased that these young men are willing to contribute to the safety of our community. With an average of 12-15 calls per month, we are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer fireman, please call Town Hall at 256-635-6814, and we will give you Chief Dustin Burt’s contact information.

Qualifications for this year’s municipal election ended June 24, and the only race on the ballot will be for Place 5 on our Town Council. Those candidates are Anna Mae Horn and Scott Pepper. The election will be Tuesday, August 26. I am so proud to retain my position as mayor for another four years. I look forward to doing all I can to better our community.

Valley Head holds Town Council meetings on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. The public is always welcome to attend.
