Yoga in Abundance, On and Off the Mountain

Our area is filled with so many natural wonders, and one of them is the abundance of yoga class options. For such a small area, there is quite the offering of yoga for locals and visitors, too.

Yoga is an ancient practice that combines breath with movement in a series of poses called ‘asanas.’ The word yoga in Sanskrit means “to yoke, to create unity.” The physical poses require the yogi to clear the mind, and that unifies the mind and body in that moment.
Many people practice yoga at home, and it is very portable; outside settings, traveling, and right in your own living room are all good spots for yoga. The class setting adds another dimension to that practice, as yogis meet and get to know others in the area. There is something about conversations while sitting on a yoga mat that creates a strong bond.
A yoga class is usually around an hour long, with a slow start that focuses on breath and loosening up, and then a “flow” of asanas, ending with savasana, or a complete rest of body and mind. All you need is a mat and some comfortable clothes. Yogis know that every class is easily adapted to their needs; maybe you can’t do a certain pose because of an old injury or recent surgery, and so you make your own modifications. Teachers help you with learning new poses and proper alignment.
The benefits of yoga are wide-ranging and numerous. Jane Patton, of Mountain Aire Yoga Studio, says, “Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned yogi, there are many benefits you can experience with a yoga practice.” Mental and emotional health improve with clearing of the mind, a renewed focus, and greater happiness. It is true — more happiness comes from yoga!
Physically, yoga increases the yogi’s breathing capacity, as deep breathing is emphasized. It is like getting more mileage out of each breath, as you take in more oxygen. Imagine the effect of that over all of the millions of breaths you take. Improved balance serves to reduce the risk of injury and falls. Stronger posture and core strength help with back issues and overall physical strength.
Flexibility definitely comes from yoga practice. Often, folks will say, “I can’t do yoga; I am not flexible.” It is a “chicken or the egg” question. Try some yoga and see how much it helps. Even just picking up something you dropped on the floor is easier!
Yoga is for all ages, and for men and women alike. Older folks can take it up, having never practiced yoga, and experience benefits right away. And little kids love the movement and the common names of asanas, like “cat and cow” and “lizard.”
