Cherokee Word of the Month: ᏚᎵᏍᏗ (Duli sdi) The Nut Moon

As the days grow shorter and the first crisp winds of autumn sweep across the mountains, the Cherokee people knew September as ᏚᎵᏍᏗ (Duli̱sdi), the Nut Moon. This was the season when the forest gave some of its greatest gifts: hickory, walnut, chestnut, and acorns. These filled baskets and bellies alike, and ensured that families would not go hungry through the long winter ahead.
The Nut Moon was more than a time for gathering food; it was a time for gratitude and preparation. Families came together to collect and store nuts, while animals like squirrels scurried about doing the same. In Cherokee tradition, the squirrel is often remembered as a wise teacher, showing humans how to notice the abundance all around them and to prepare with care.
A Story to Share
One teaching tale tells of Grandmother Squirrel, who saw the people struggling to prepare for winter. From the top of her hickory tree, she called down to them: “Look around you! The Creator has filled the forest with food.” She showed them the nuts hidden in shells, taught them how to crack them, and reminded them to bury some for new trees to grow. Thanks to her wisdom, the people learned to thrive through the cold months, never forgetting to give thanks.
Community Activity: Nut Moon Gratitude Gathering
To honor Duli̱sdi, try this simple activity at home or with friends:
- Go on a nut walk. Collect acorns, hickory nuts, or walnuts you find on the ground.
- Choose one nut and decorate its shell with paint, markers, or even natural dyes. Write or draw a small symbol of something you’re thankful for on the nut’s surface.
- Share your thanks. As you gather, take a moment to name something you are grateful for this season. You can also place your decorated nut in a community basket with others, creating a shared artwork of gratitude.
By practicing gratitude and preparation, we carry forward the wisdom of the Nut Moon and the teachings of Grandmother Squirrel.
