The American Flag: A Symbol of Freedom and Unity

This is the final installment in Barry’s series about the flags displayed at American Legion Post 215 in Mentone.

The American flag, often referred to as “Old Glory” or “The Stars and Stripes,” is one of the most recognized symbols in the world. It represents the country’s ideals, history, and unity, and is a powerful emblem of patriotism for Americans.

The current flag of the United States features 13 horizontal stripes, alternating red and white, that symbolize the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain and formed the United States. In the upper left corner, there is a blue rectangle known as the “union,” which contains 50 white stars. Each star represents one of the 50 states in the Union.

Red: Stands for valor and bravery.

White: Signifies purity and innocence.

Blue: Represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

The American flag has evolved over time. The original design, adopted on June 14, 1777, had 13 stars and 13 stripes, reflecting the original colonies. As new states joined the Union, the number of stars increased, but the stripes remained at 13 to honor the founding colonies. The current version, with 50 stars, was adopted on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the fiftieth state.

Flag Etiquette and Display

There are specific guidelines for displaying the American flag, known as the United States Flag Code. The flag should be treated with respect and never allowed to touch the ground. It is flown on many occasions, including national holidays, and is flown at government buildings, schools, and homes. On Memorial Day and other solemn occasions, the flag is flown at half-staff to honor those who have died in service to the nation. If the flag flies all day and night, there is a light on the flag all night. The American Legion Post in Mentone uses two solar spotlights.

Beyond its official use, the American flag is a powerful symbol in American culture. It is often seen at sporting events, parades, and protests, representing freedom, equality, and the spirit of the American people. The flag inspires pride and unity, reminding citizens of their shared history and values.

The American flag is much more than a piece of fabric; it is a living symbol of the nation’s history, values, and dreams. Its design reflects the journey from 13 colonies to a nation of 50 states, and its colors and stars continue to inspire generations of Americans.
