A Day at the River

One of the best hikes in DeSoto State Park offers a close encounter with a 20-foot waterfall and easy access to the West Fork of Little River.

Indian Falls at DeSoto State Park

Park at the Talmadge Butler Boardwalk (if this lot is full, park at the playground or Country Store), watch for traffic, and walk across the road. Follow the signs to Indian Falls, where a foot bridge gives you a stunning view of the falls from its very top.

Hike down to the base of the falls, enjoy the view, and do some exploring among the rock formations. Practice caution, as the rocks may be wet.

Continue past the falls along a path that leads you to the West Fork. This is part of the Yellow Trail.

Depending on water levels, you’ll find the river flowing at a nice pace, offering beautiful photo opportunities. But don’t just experience the views through your phone or camera; take time to be fully present and marvel at the power of the river and the natural beauty surrounding you.

Hike downstream, and you’ll find wide areas with plenty of space to sit and enjoy a picnic lunch. Bring friends or family with you, and plan plenty of time to enjoy the experience with nature. There is a moderate climb back out, but it’s well worth it.
