A Season of Light and New Beginnings

As the year draws to a close and the air turns crisp with the promise of winter, our hearts naturally turn toward reflection. The holidays remind us of what matters most — connection, kindness, and the quiet miracle of being here, together, for another season.

This is the time to pause and notice the light — whether it’s a candle flickering in a window, laughter around a shared table of delicious food, or the gentle peace that settles in when we let gratitude fill us. Even in uncertain times, love remains the thread that binds us, guiding us toward healing and hope.

A few Decembers ago, I gathered a small group of friends to sing Christmas carols for the residents of a local apartment community. It was the kind of chilly night where we could see our breath as we sang, but that didn’t stop us from pouring our hearts into every note of “Silent Night,” “We Three Kings,” and “O Holy Night.”

The residents received our songs with applause, smiles, and a few joyful tears. When we had finished visiting all the homes, our little group returned to my place for cookies and hot chocolate. We couldn’t help but marvel at how full our hearts felt after giving something so simple. I knew that, for many of the residents, it was the first time they had ever experienced this small act of kindness — and it reminded us that the holidays are truly about sharing light where it’s most needed. As we said our goodbyes that night, we hugged and promised to do it again, each of us carrying home the quiet joy of having given what we could — and having received even more in return.

Now, the new year stands before us like a blank page, waiting for the stories we will write. We can choose to move forward with open hearts — to listen more deeply, to forgive, and to believe once again in what’s possible. So as we cross the threshold into 2026, may we carry gratitude for all that has shaped us and courage for all that lies ahead.
