Alzheimer’s Awareness

Alzheimer’s is a brain disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior.
Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease
- Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s disease, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information, forgetting important dates or events and asking the same questions over and over.
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Some people living with changes in their memory due to Alzheimer’s or other dementia may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers.
- Confusion with time or place. People living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia can lose track of dates, seasons, and the passage of time.
- New problems with words in speaking or writing. A person may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation or repeat themselves.
- Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. A person living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia may put things in unusual places.
- Changes in mood and personality. Individuals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia may become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful, or anxious.
Why get checked for Alzheimer’s Disease?
Getting checked by your doctor can help determine what’s causing symptoms. If Alzheimer’s is the cause, an early diagnosis allows you:
Access to treatment options: An early Alzheimer’s diagnosis provides you with a better chance of benefiting from treatment.
A chance to prioritize your health: Some lifestyle changes, such as controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, participating in exercise, and staying mentally and socially active, may help preserve cognitive function.
