Class to Help Adults Evaluate Online Information

The internet, as it has grown in popularity as a source of information, has at the same time become home to conspiracy theories, misinformation, and disinformation. In an environment where there is so much information, it’s worthwhile to question how users can know if the sources they encounter are trustworthy.

Moon Lake Library is hosting a class on March 13 at 2 p.m. to help patrons develop the skills to conduct safe and effective internet searches and to assist them in accurately assessing the reliability of the information they uncover. Media Literacy: Skills for Evaluating Information Online is an in-person program created specifically for public library use to assist adults who may not have had the opportunity through formal education or professional training to develop strong skills with technology and the evaluation of online sources.

The program will last approximately one hour and will be presented by Anna Henderson, a graduate student in the Masters of Information Sciences program at the University of Tennessee. Henderson currently works as an independent contractor for a software development company in Toronto. Her professional work focuses on researching and fact-checking bias in Artificial Intelligence (AI) chat models and effective methods of counter-speech for misinformation, disinformation, propaganda, and hate speech. She completed her undergraduate studies at Troy University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in English. Henderson is originally from Dothan, Alabama, but now calls Chattanooga home.

March 6 at 3 p.m. – Poetry group is forming for anyone interested in reading and discussing poetry from any time period. Come to this “get acquainted” meeting.

March 7 at 2 p.m. – Workshop on Creativity with Ruth Ferraz. Registrants will develop both life skills and their artistic ability in four Friday afternoon sessions based on Dr. Betty Edward’s book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.” Pre-registration is required. There is currently a wait list. Call the library for more information.

March 7 at 6 p.m. – Family Game Night! Bring a snack to share, and we’ll enjoy board games and cards at the library.

March 8 at 10:30 a.m. – The Moon Lake Library Book Club meets for a discussion of books about pilgrimages and road trips.
