First Day Hike: A New Year’s Tradition of Adventure

DeSoto State Park invites hikers of all ages to celebrate both the New Year and the Year of Alabama Trails with its annual First Day Hike, a guided journey through some of the park’s most scenic and beloved natural features. Led by park staff and volunteers, this moderate three-mile trek highlights a series of waterfalls including Lost Falls, Laurel Falls, Indian Falls, along with peaceful water features such as Laurel Creek and the West Fork of Little River.

The route follows sections of the orange and blue trails, winding through hardwood forest, sandstone outcroppings, wetlands, and rocky terrain. It’s an ideal way to embrace Alabama’s statewide celebration of outdoor recreation and connect with the natural beauty of Lookout Mountain.

The hike is free, open to all ages, and requires no preregistration. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Participants should meet at DeSoto’s Country Store on County Road 89 for the 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. hike.

Attendees should dress for seasonal temperatures and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, as the trail may be wet and uneven. Bringing water, sports drinks, snacks or lunch, and optional hiking poles is recommended.
