Giving Thanks

In the few fast weeks that I have been in the role of executive director of MERF, I can surely say that I have learned a lot. No, make that A LOT..

From “Groundhog” distribution concerns (“Hi, did you know that Bruce’s Foodland is already out of October issues?”) to senior lunch crowds (“Hey, you forgot to call them and remind them!”) and from honoring the grant submission deadline at the end of this month to making sure we have enough t-shirts in the DeSoto Park Store, everything is important. It’s what makes MERF visible, successful, and able to impact you in our community and folks in our neighboring communities.

These issues are minor compared to others I am learning about. Did you know that the historic MERF house is to undergo renovations soon? These will make the building safe, strong, and accessible again. Over half of the funds needed to make this happen have been raised, and we are working diligently to raise the rest. We look forward to the time when club meetings, lunches, and other activities can return to the building like in the “good ole days.” We are hopeful this can happen by summer 2025.

How do we do all that we do? I see that it really comes down to the open hearts and hands of our own community. Volunteers, sponsors, and donors of all experience levels, ages, and interests keep the many varied and vital moving pieces of MERF working. From delivering the paper to area businesses to serving tasty lunches to smiling seniors on Wednesdays at Moon Lake Baptist Church, we are thankful for these hearts and hands. From donors and supporters who send us funds in honor of loved ones to be placed in one of our scholarship funds, to local businesses who advertise in the paper, we are thankful for these hearts and hands.

Local camps, church groups, businesses, and even individuals have said “yes” when asked if they could be, do, or share. We are thankful for these hearts and hands.

As this Thanksgiving holiday approaches, like most folks I will reflect on the blessings of my life. I am grateful that I can be a part of this nonprofit organization at this time.

For over 30 years, MERF has provided programs and opportunities that enrich the lives and learning of many — young and old — and we are proud to continue this mission for many years to come.

Because of you, the many hearts and hands who give of their time, money, energy, ideas, blessings, laughter, and tears, MERF is here to stay. We thank you.
