January Meeting Recap: MERF and More

The January meeting of the Valley Head Area Women’s Club enlightened the attendees of the many contributions that MERF makes to the local community. MERF Executive Director Alyce Kenney was the speaker for the program in the newly renovated Hazel Huntsinger Community Room at Moon Lake Library. The room is very convenient and comfortable, with plenty of space. Children’s artwork from previous MERF auctions line the wall.

Alyce gave a wonderful talk about all things MERF and how long the arms of MERF stretch around the community. MERF provides Senior Lunches with an element of education and a place for socialization. They also provide local scholarships, introduce students to live productions, and support educational enrichment in a variety of ways. MERF funds provide an art teacher and supplies for the local elementary school. The MERF Pathway to Community is always open for everyone. Alyce also informed the club members that the MERF House is under renovation and, once completed, will fulfill the need for community space and activities. We appreciate all that Alyce and MERF do for the community.

After the program, the club held its regular meeting. Club members were excited to have several visitors this month. Everyone present introduced themselves, which led to lively conversation enjoyed by all.

Members voted to donate funds for a MERF luncheon on March 26 and supply brownies for dessert. This is a great opportunity for the club to support the community. Members also voted to increase the two annual scholarships for graduating students from Valley Head School. The 2025 scholarships will be $700 each. Applications will open in April.

Mayor Karen Vest will be the speaker for our next meeting, scheduled for February 19. We look forward to hearing about everything that is happening in Valley Head. If you would like to join or be a guest at a meeting, we would love to hear from you.
