Library Hosts Film Series Highlighting Alabama’s Rivers

Moon Lake Library and the Alabama Rivers Alliance (ARA) will sponsor a showing of the 2024 Southern Exposure films about the state’s rivers on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. ARA is a statewide network of groups working to protect and restore all of Alabama’s water resources through building partnerships, empowering citizens, and advocating for sound water policy and its enforcement.

Each summer, the alliance hosts a fellowship program, airing the resulting films in locations around the state. These five short films aim to raise awareness about Alabama’s remarkable biodiversity and natural resources.

Jack West

Jack West, ARA director of special projects, will present a short program prior to the showing of the films and will be available for questions and discussion afterward. West joined ARA in 2020 and brings legal experience from corporate private practice, as well as an entrepreneurial background, to ARA. He is a Birmingham native and grew up camping in Cheaha State Park, fishing in Lake Guntersville, and backpacking Alabama’s Pinhoti Trail. He and his wife, Emily, live in Mentone.

The following films will be shown at Moon Lake Library:

• “Alabama Roots” – Directed by Kaleb Manske and Hannah Schoettmer
• “The Cost of Forever” – Directed by Charlie Connell
• “Forces of Nature” – Directed by Olivia Hall
• “Saving Seagrass” – Directed by Robert Boyd
• “Philopatry” – Directed by Jermaine Thompson

The program is free and open to the public. In addition to parking in front of the library, there is parking at Moon Lake Village off East River Road and also in the grass beside the library just off the driveway between the library and the MERF House.
