MERF Looks Ahead to a Fantastic School Year

As summer winds down and the cicadas hum their late-season song, August brings with it that familiar mix of anticipation and excitement. School is just around the corner, and across our community, teachers are diving into the hustle of preparing for a new academic year.
At MERF, we’re excited to support our local educators and students as they get ready to begin this next chapter. From filling out data sheets and prepping materials, to the most fun (and mentally energizing) part — setting up classrooms — August is a time of reflection, intention, and endless possibility.
Just recently, MERF hosted a rejuvenating teacher retreat at Camp Skyline. It was a time for educators to recharge, connect, and feel appreciated for all the love and dedication they bring to their work. With that spark of inspiration still fresh, our teachers are now thoughtfully crafting environments where learning can truly thrive.
This beginning-of-the-year momentum is powerful. Teachers aren’t just organizing supplies and seating charts — they’re laying the foundation for success, for both themselves, their teams, and their students. Every bulletin board, book arrangement, and slide deck is made with care and purpose, setting the tone for a year full of growth, creativity, and connection.
I remember my first year teaching — it was full of exciting unknowns and, admittedly, a lot of stress. With the support of thoughtful and seasoned colleagues, I pushed through and quickly felt part of a stronger synergy. Looking back, the students were truly an anchor in the midst of it all. Some may say it’s the opposite, but their presence and energy gave me focus and purpose. At the end of the day, teachers simply want to inspire others — and fill their own buckets, too.
MERF is proud to be part of this process. As we fulfill grants, plan programs, and support the arts and education in our community, we’re reminded again and again of the incredible strength and heart behind our teachers, administration, staff, and community members alike.
Here’s to the fresh notebooks, bright ideas, and the wonderful year to come! Y
