More Than Books at Moon Lake Library

Pop into the library on any given day, and you’re likely to find a quiet or even a not-so-quiet hub of activity. While its book collection is growing every month with the purchase of current bestsellers and patron requests, the library offers a number of other services and resources to local families and visitors alike.

For instance:

Copy Services: Save a trip off the mountain. Let the library print or copy documents for you. Black and white copies are just a quarter each; color is fifty cents.

Tax Preparation: For the third year in a row, Moon Lake Library hosted free tax prep during tax season. Dottye Pierce provides this valuable service through RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Movie Nights: Enjoy movies with friends and family usually once a month at the library. The Friends of Moon Lake Library provides a film license that allows us to show popular movies. We’ve shown first-run films such as “Barbie” and “Wicked” as soon as they were available. We’ve also shown seasonal classics and shivered through an Alfred Hitchcock mini-film series.

Children’s Programs: Lynn Vanderhoff provides sessions for kids ages 3-6 each Thursday at 3 p.m. during the Summer Reading Program. Older children are welcome to help with crafts, games, and story time.

Meeting Space: Need a room for a program or meeting? Check with the library. We’ve had groups use the main library for large gatherings or classes or the Hazel Huntsinger Community Room for smaller meetings. There is a small charge if the activity is for profit.

Ukulele Lessons: The Mentone Ukes, the library’s house band, practice at 1 p.m. every other Saturday. Beginners are always welcome!

Adult Programming: The library’s featured speakers present a variety of programs on topics as wide-ranging as the Antarctic, falconry, and arthritis pain. We also occasionally host authors who share the backstory of their books and their paths to publication.

Free Wifi: Thanks to our membership in the Alabama Supercomputer Consortium, the library has a strong wifi network both inside and outside. Join Moon Lake Guest network and you will be online quickly, even out in the parking lot.

Canning Kit: Want to try your hand at hot water bath canning but don’t have the equipment? Check out the canning kit and you’ll be on your way.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library: Friends of Moon Lake Library fund enrollment in Dolly Parton’s remarkable literacy program that provides free books monthly to children ages 0-5 in the 35984 zip code. Sign up online or stop by the library to register.

Interest Groups: Want to up your game at Scrabble or Mah Jongg? Need an early morning yoga class? Do you knit or crochet or want to learn? Look for the monthly list of activities or sign up for the library’s email newsletter to get the latest updates on what happens when.
