My American Experience

Groundhog seeks submissions for essay project
The Groundhog is seeking essays from readers to mark the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding.
“History is more than a list of dates, people, and places,” says Groundhog editor Stephen V. Smith. “It’s a rich tapestry woven by millions of colorful threads, each a story of folks from all walks of life who experience the unfolding of history on a deep, personal level.”
The goal of the “My American Experience” essay project is to collect the thoughts of those in our communities about what it means to be an American. “The American spirit captures an array of emotions and reflections for different people and can even change on a personal level across time,” says Smith. “We hope to collect essays that will create a snapshot of this moment, to document this important milestone in the life of our nation.”
Suggested topics for the essay include:
- An experience you had that shaped the person you are today
- A story of a family member or someone in your community that exemplifies the American spirit
- The best things about America
- America’s greatest challenges
- What makes you proud about our country
- What disappoints you about America
- A message you’d like to share with those celebrating America’s 300th anniversary in 2076
“While political issues certainly impact how history unfolds,” says Smith, “readers are encouraged to avoid typical rants and instead reach for stories with deeper reflections that look beyond the current political climate. Likewise, we want to see more than superficial patriotism. We’re looking for substance that will create a valuable, thought-provoking image of this moment and its place in the grand story of America.”
Selected submissions will be published in upcoming issues of The Groundhog’s print and online editions.
