NACC Launches Social Dance Class at Moon Lake

Are you ready to hit the dance floor but need a course for beginners? Whether you’re wanting to show off your moves at a wedding or just want to groove for fun, this Social Dance Class is for you.

As part of its commitment to extending learning opportunities for those in the Mentone and Lookout Mountain region, Northeast Alabama Community College is offering a new course to help people learn skills and to enrich the community.

This introductory course focuses on the foundational techniques of social dance, designed for beginners seeking to build confidence, coordination, and musical responsiveness in a recreational dance setting. Each week features a new dance style — from the elegant Waltz to the fiery Cha Cha, the cool West Coast Swing to a spicy Latin Fusion.

Participants will learn:

• Easy-to-follow steps

• Lead/follow techniques

• Social dance etiquette

• Low-impact cardio that’s FUN!

Classes are held each Thursday from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. (except for holidays) at the Moon Lake campus through August 7. Participants can register and join the series at any time.

The fee is only $25 per person for the entire series.

The course is taught by Kayleigh Smith. Director of Theatre for NACC, Smith has choreographed many of the productions at the college through the years.

“I encourage everyone to join us,” she says. “Whether you want to learn a new skill, discover a new dance style, or just enjoy the community experience that comes from social dancing, you’ll find something to love about these classes.”

East Coast Swing
A fun, upbeat intro to social dance. Easy to learn, high energy, and instantly engaging.

Waltz
Slow things down with a classic ballroom staple—elegant and romantic.

Rumba
Intro to Latin rhythms

Foxtrot
Great for social settings, blends well with swing roots.

West Coast Swing
Cool and a little more modern. Builds nicely off of earlier swing work.

Cha Cha
Fun footwork and lots of personality.

Tango
Sharp movements and staccato rhythm.

Latin Dance Fusion
Salsa, Meringue, Bachata, Samba
