NACC’s Vocal Ensemble Is Now a Non-Credit Class

Education returned to the Moon Lake campus earlier this year when Northeast Alabama Community College announced plans to offer classes at the historic school. Students of various ages enrolled in the music, writing, and English classes offered there by NACC.

For the upcoming spring semester (January 7 – May 1) the vocal ensemble class will be a non-credit course.
“This will make it easier for people who want to sing in a choir but don’t want to go through the registration process and receive college credit,” says Dean of Student Services Jeff Hawes.

Admissions and financial aid representatives from NACC will be available at the Moon Lake campus on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help people register for this and other classes.

Dr. Kathy Adkins will continue to teach the vocal ensemble course. She was part of the famed Forester Sisters, who charted five number-one hits and 15 total top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot Country charts in the 1980s and 1990s. The three-time Grammy-nominated group was named Group of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in 1986. Adkins has taught extensively at elementary, high school, and college levels and has received numerous awards for her service and leadership.

“We are very excited about providing these courses at Moon Lake School in Mentone,” NACC President Dr. David Campbell stated upon announcing the classes this summer. “We are starting with courses that we think will be beneficial to traditional students and life-long learning community members as well. We will equip our classrooms on the Moon Lake campus with the education technology that is used in higher education instruction, just as we do on our campus.”

The Town of Mentone owns the campus and worked closely with NACC to prepare classrooms for the college. “This is a tremendous benefit for our community, and just the beginning of great things to come from this partnership,” said Mayor Rob Hammond. “We encourage everyone to consider these classes, especially those who want to sing in an ensemble led by such a talented and experienced instructor as Dr. Adkins.”
