National Day of Prayer Gathering Well Attended

by Victoria Gaston
The National Day of Prayer is observed annually, on the first Thursday in May. This day of prayer, designated by Congress, asks people to “turn to God in prayer and meditation.” People join in prayer by attending churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and monasteries, by joining in prayer groups, and by meditating on their own, while others attend interdenominational prayer events. The theme for this year’s Day of Prayer was, “Lift Up The Word – Light Up The World,” and the theme biblical verse reads, “For you are my lamp, O Lord, and My God lightens my darkness.” (Samuel 22:29-31)
Norah and Phil Gamble organized the Mentone Interdenominational Day of Prayer observance at the Moon Lake School Conference Room. It was well attended by members of the Mentone and surrounding communities. The desire to be united together for the good of our nation and our community was evident.
The time of prayer was beautifully seamless as we sang hymns and shared in prayer. Ministers from each church in Mentone, along with representatives of civic organizations, businesses, first responders, and community members, were invited to pray for specific aspects of our common life in this area. The desire to be united in purpose regarding all aspects of what it means to live in harmony, in the encouragement and respect for the rich diversity and abilities of each and every person in this area, was powerful.
With great thanks to Norah Gamble, I hope you will place next year’s National Day of Prayer on your calendar and plan to attend Mentone’s special observance. All are welcome to join in and offer prayers, supplication, and thanksgiving for our nation and community.
