Red Flags To Spot Health Fraud Scams

Health fraud scams refer to products that claim to prevent, treat, or cure diseases but are not proven safe and effective for those uses. These scams may be promoted in magazine ads, TV commercials and infomercials, or promoted by talk radio hosts and social media influencers.

Look for these red flags to spot health fraud scams, especially for older adults:

1. A TV commercial, social media influencer, talk radio host, website or advertisement promises immediate, effortless, or guaranteed results.

2. Claims of an “innovation,” “miracle cure,” “exclusive product,” “new discovery,” or “magical cure” are highly suspect. These words are used to appeal to your emotions and should not be trusted.

3. A product is promoted as a “natural” cure or “dietary supplement” that sounds too good to be true. Be aware of anti-aging scams and arthritis scams. There has been no treatment proven to slow or reverse aging or cure arthritis.

4. There are no science-based testimonials; instead, testimonials are from celebrities or actors pretending to be highly satisfied customers. Ask your doctor before buying nutrition supplements or health treatments.

5. The seller promises a money-back guarantee, no questions asked. Marketers of fraudulent products will make sweeping promises, but not return your money.
