Water Line Improvements Begin on 89

Work is set to begin in September to install a new water line along County Road 89 North, significantly increasing the water supply for the residents and businesses of Mentone.

Contractors for Fort Payne Water, which owns the system, will first bore under Alabama Highway 117 to run a new 10-inch water line to 89 North. Work will then begin to extend the 10-inch line approximately half a mile along 89 North to the tanks that supply water service to the town.

The new line will replace the existing line along its current path on the east side of 89 North.

Brandon Light, executive director of Fort Payne Water, says the upgrade will quadruple the volume of water available to Mentone. “As fast as Mentone is growing, and with all the camps in the area, this project will benefit the entire town by providing a more solid supply of water,” he says. It will also reduce water outages and pressure drops, while supporting fire protection efforts.

The project is funded by a $295,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to Fort Payne Water. Local sources will provide matching funds, bringing the project total to $590,000. The project “is essential for ensuring safe, reliable water service and supporting the town’s tourism-driven economy,” said Congressman Robert Aderholt in announcing the ARC grant award in January.

Contractors have 90 days to complete the project. Work will be done in sections to minimize disruptions in service. Light says any driveways, flower beds, and yards damaged during the work will be returned to their original condition, or better.
