Mentone Native Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Fred Johnson’s remarkable life began with his upbringing in Mentone and led to a career that has connected thousands of Alabamians to world-class broadband. Along the way, his influence has helped shape telecommunications policy at the state and national levels.

Johnson, the son of Mentone’s James and Betty Joe (Jones) Johnson, was honored in January with the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce “V.I. Prewett Lifetime Achievement Award.”

This award honors individuals whose extraordinary vision, leadership, and dedication have profoundly shaped their communities. Much like its namesake, this award recognizes those who have driven transformative change, fostering growth, employment, and prosperity in their region.
Fred Johnson has dedicated over 42 years to advancing rural utilities and communications, with 23 years as CEO of Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative (FTC). Under his visionary leadership, FTC has evolved into a nationally recognized provider of cutting-edge rural broadband services, pioneering advancements such as Alabama’s first widely deployed gigabit internet service.

His career began in public accounting and financial roles in rural utilities, culminating in his transformative tenure at FTC. Taking the helm during a pivotal period, he reshaped the cooperative’s strategy, guiding it from traditional telephone services to a forward-thinking telecommunications enterprise with a 100% optical fiber-to-the-premise network.

A respected industry advocate, Fred has served on numerous boards, including as chair of NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association and a member of the Alabama 9-1-1 Board, where he drove significant policy reforms. Known for his ability to inspire and connect, Fred’s influence extends beyond FTC to state and national arenas, where his expertise is frequently sought by policymakers.

Johnson’s dedication to community growth, innovative leadership, and unwavering commitment to improving lives through technology make him a deserving recipient of the V.I. Prewett Lifetime Achievement Award. His legacy is one of transformation, resilience, and profound impact on the people and communities he serves.

The Chamber was set to award the V.I. Prewett Lifetime Achievement Award to Johnson at its annual awards banquet on January 28, 2025.
