Groundhog Volunteer Hero: Wes Pullen

This month, we recognize the dedication of volunteer firefighter and lifelong emergency service worker Wes Pullen of Mentone. Wes and his wife, Helen, a retired high school teacher, moved here from Birmingham in 2015. Not long after they built their house, Wes began volunteering with the North Lookout Mountain Fire Protection District.

Fortunately for our residents, Wes’ dedication comes with invaluable experience and knowledge. Before moving to this area from Birmingham, he served as lieutenant and paramedic with the Mountain Brook Fire Department, just a slice of his professional career. He is a nationally certified fire investigator, and in addition to working in the field, he represents Mentone in the DeKalb County Association of Fire Departments.

Wes puts in about 15 hours a month with the district, including fighting fires, administrative work, and spending time with other district volunteers assessing high-risk structures and planning emergency response in various areas within our community.

He estimates the Lookout Mountain volunteers handle an average of two to three structure fires per year.

A debt of gratitude is owed to all those who are committed to public safety. Wes’ expertise and generosity have had a tremendous impact on our community.
