Riverview Camp Home to Champion Hawthorn Tree

Tucked into the natural beauty of Riverview Camp for Girls stands a tree that is quietly extraordinary. The Littlehip Hawthorn (Crataegus spathulata) has been officially recognized as the Alabama Champion Tree for its species, an honor reserved for the largest known example of a tree in the state. The designation is based on height, trunk circumference, and crown spread.
The outstanding specimen was discovered by Dan Green, formerly with the Alabama Forestry Commission and now a volunteer with the North Lookout Mountain Fire Protection District. While conducting work on a fire protection plan at the camp, Green noticed the impressive Hawthorn and realized it met the criteria for champion status. Following his nomination, the designation was formally confirmed through the Alabama Forestry Commission’s Champion Tree Program and recognized by State Forester Rick Oates.
The Champion Tree Program documents and celebrates Alabama’s most remarkable trees, helping preserve the state’s natural heritage. This Littlehip Hawthorn is more than a record holder — it’s a living landmark. Rooted in history and cared for with intention, it stands as a reminder that when nature is protected and valued, it leaves a lasting legacy.
