Americana Nights Set for August 30

After great shows in June and July, the Mentone Americana Nights series returns on Saturday, August 30 with an evening of music featuring The George Britt Band and Alabama’s own Kat Hunter.

The series is held at the Shigley Amphitheater on Moon Lake Campus. Music begins at 3 p.m. and extends into the evening. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the many shops and galleries across the campus and to make reservations to enjoy the creole and cajun flavors of Moon Lake Kitchen.

Known for his emotionally resonant voice and timeless storytelling, George Britt is an Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame honoree who blends country, rock, and blues.

Britt, his wife Joann, and son Joseph once ran the beloved Lowell Opry House near Carrollton, Georgia, selling out shows and earning devoted fans throughout the region. Britt began his musical career with a love of writing, like his brother. Through the local chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International, their songs found their way to the Nashville chapter and were recorded and distributed. Britt began singing at gigs, launched by a performance at a family reunion.

Covid led the Britts to re-evaluate their time, and they decided to close the Lowell Opry House and take their music on the road. “I’ve had some great opportunities,” Britt said. “This community was just thirsty for music.”

Kat Hunter

The August show will also feature Kat Hunter, a country singer/songwriter with deep Alabama roots. Born in Mobile, she spent much of her life in Cottondale near Tuscaloosa before moving to Nashville. Growing up, she often visited her grandmother, who introduced her to the scenic beauty of Fort Payne and Mentone. Hunter now calls Lake Logan Martin home.

Her parents Ivy and Fred Hunter (of Absolutely Alabama and Fred Hunter’s Alabama fame) gifted her a guitar at age 16. It wasn’t long before she discovered a love and talent for songwriting and performing, transforming her into an artist wanting nothing more than to share her unique stories and songs with a larger audience.
