Experience Spring’s Glory at Little River Canyon

Spring arrives gently on Lookout Mountain, first in flashes of green along the canyon rim, then in a full chorus of birdsong, wildflowers, and rushing water. At the edge of Little River Canyon National Preserve, the Little River Canyon Center becomes both a gateway and a gathering place where a simple afternoon outdoors can turn into something richer.

April is when that energy peaks and the Canyon Center’s calendar offers plenty of ways to enjoy it.

Hike with a Naturalist:
Bridge Trail to Little Falls

Friday, April 3 | 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
A guided 3-mile hike with the JSU Field School through Little River Canyon National Preserve, exploring local plants, wildlife, and natural history.

Canyon Kids: Insects

Wednesday, April 8 | 10:30–11:30 a.m.
A hands-on outdoor program for children ages 3 through third grade, focused on learning about insects through exploration and activity.

Tuesday, April 14 | 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
An interactive outdoor learning experience for ages 8–12, centered on building confidence, curiosity, and environmental awareness.

A second opportunity for ages 8–12 to take part in this hands-on program exploring nature and practical outdoor skills.

Saturday, April 18 | 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
A shorter, guided 1.5-mile hike offering an accessible way to experience the canyon’s spring landscape.

Fly Fishing 101 at the Canyon Center

Sunday, April 19 | 2–5 p.m.
An introductory workshop covering gear, knots, fly selection, and casting, with hands-on instruction for beginners (ages 14+).

All of this unfolds during one of the most fleeting and beautiful windows of the year. How fortunate we are to have this natural resource so near.
